Bishop Brooke Foss Westcott's Clever Denial of the Bodily Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ

by D. A., Th.D., Ph.D Waite

Editorial Reviews

Book Description
Anglican Bishop Brooke Foss Westcott teamed with Professor Fenton John
Anthony Hort to produce, in 1881, their revolutionary Greek New Testament
text on which, in large measure, the modern versions are based. By my own
actual count, this text has departed from the KJB's Textus Receptus Greek
New Testament text in 5,604 places involving 9,970 Greek words.

The reason for the interest in this theme in 1983 was because a professor
in a "fundamental" University had written a friend of mine concerning
Westcott and Hort. The professor was attempting to show this friend how
"orthodox" Westcott was. He cited two books that Westcott had written on
Christ's resurrection which he thought proved that Westcott believed in
the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. In an effort to find out
for myself, I analyzed these two books in this present work. I found that
the exact opposite was true. Westcott repeatedly denied the Bodily
Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ!

This same professor wrote a book in which he attempted to show the
theological orthodoxy of both Westcott and Hort. I had already written my
book, The Theological Heresies of Westcott and Hort. The difference
between these two books is this: I cite not only the page numbers where
Westcott and Hort are theologically apostate in their five books, but also
quote their words exactly to prove my point. The professor only cites some
pages where he alleges Westcott and Hort are theologically orthodox but
does not quote one sentence to prove it. In fact, often these same pages
prove of their apostasy.

Since 1983, when I first published this book in another form, there has
been a continuous debate as to whether or not Bishop Brooke Foss Westcott
and Professor Fenton John Anthony Hort are theological conservatives, or
theological heretics. There are now three main sources to prove the
apostasy and heresy of both Westcott and Hort: (1) The Life and Letters of
Westcott and The Life and Letters of Hort by their sons, Arthur Westcott
and Arthur Hort. These books consist of various letters written by
Westcott and Hort to various people in which they reveal repeatedly their
theological apostasy and heresy. These are primary sources of information
about their beliefs on a number of topics. (2) This is a theological
analysis of five books, three by Westcott (John, Hebrews, and the Epistles
of John) and two by Hort (1 Peter and Revelation). There are about 125
quotations taken up in this booklet. (3) Brooke Foss Westcott's Clever
Denial of the Bodily Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is the third link
in the chain of evidence showing Westcott's theological apostasy and
heresy. It is hoped that this new format might not only make it easier to
distribute widely but also prove his apostasy for all to see!
